Goodbye Lonely (2005) |
About the RecordingGoodbye Lonely was recorded on a pro-tools rig in a converted barn garage. This project was a real cross-border collaboration. First, Chris the drummer came down south with me and laid down all his parts in a couple of days. He also read a few books, spent a bunch of money at Grimey’s record store and drank some beer before going back to Calgary. After Chris left, some of Neilson’s music friends started to drop by on a daily basis to record their parts. In between, we’d watch the presidential debates, eat turkey sandwiches and Neilson would yell at the TV. Then, we’d go back across the yard to the studio and play around some more. On my nights off, I’d drive into town and I remember getting caught in the craziest thunderstorm I’d ever been in. Then, there was the night Neilson’s cat Bruiser snuck past me and out the door eluding my chase for twenty panicked minutes. After all the instrument tracks were complete, I brought Neilson back to Calgary so he could a) help record my vocals and b) freeze his butt off. Luckily, Neilson loved working with Dave and Al at Sundae Sound Studios so much that he didn’t seem to notice the weather. I lent him a down filled jacket too, which probably helped. A week later, Neilson headed back home to Tennessee with my unfinished album tucked under his arm. The album was mixed and mastered in Nashville. A month later, I had a new record and America had a new president. Song NotesTariq's thoughts on each song. Read the lyrics for each song in HTML or PDF format. |
